About the Journal

Biogeography is an academic-owned, Diamond Open Access journal, published by the academic, non-profit, Stanford University Press (SUP), using the Public Knowledge Project’s Open Journal Systems platform (PKP-OJS). Launched in September 2025 as the official journal of the Free Association of Biogeographers, the journal aims to provide a high quality research outlet that is free for both authors and readers. This goal is made possible initially by support from Lyrasis’ OACIP fund and a grant from the Gates Foundation to PKP & SUP.

The journal provides an important resource for the biogeography community, which has seen considerable turmoil in its publication options over the past half-decade (Peterson et al. 2019 Divers Distrib 25:5 https://doi.org/10.1111/ddi.12885; Williams et al. 2023 J Biogeogr 50:1485 https://doi.org/10.1111/jbi.14697). Thus, the editorial board’s goal in establishing the journal is to provide all biogeographers with an affordable, constructive, high-quality outlet for their research and, in doing so, to demonstrate that there are alternatives to large (or small) for-profit publishers and to realize the community’s desire for an affordable, inclusive, quality journal, that is editorially independent.

Costs

Biogeography is a diamond (a.k.a. platinum) open access scientific journal, which means it is free to both authors and readers. Costs of editing and production are mitigated in part by the volunteer service of the editorial board and reviewers, who we appreciate deeply for supporting the community at large.

Society partners

Biogeography is also brought to you in partnership with the Australian Marine Sciences Association and the Society for Island Biology.
